In a remarkable display of regional solidarity, Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, convened a significant meeting with ambassadors from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) this Thursday, November 30, 2023. The gathering at the State House in Freetown came in the wake of a dramatic but unsuccessful coup attempt last undayS.
President Bio briefed the envoys from Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia, and The Gambia on the recent upheaval, reassuring them that the nation’s security situation is now stable. He emphasized his commitment to Sierra Leone’s transformative ‘Big Five Gamechangers’ which include initiatives like FEED SALONE and Youth Empowerment.
Reflecting a spirit of unity, the Nigerian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Henry John Omaku, voiced Nigeria’s unwavering support. He emphasized that ECOWAS stands firmly against illegal seizures of power, promising swift assistance upon request.
Echoing these sentiments, Ghana’s High Commissioner, H.E. Mrs. Worwornyo Agyeman, highlighted the interconnectedness of Ghana and Sierra Leone. She revealed plans for an ECOWAS standby force to inspect the regional logistics depot in Lungi on Friday, further underscoring ECOWAS’s role in maintaining regional stability.
The Gambia, Liberia, and Guinea also pledged their support for President Bio’s government, with Guinea confirming adherence to ECOWAS protocols, including border controls.
In a closing note, Sierra Leone’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Timothy Musa Kabba, expressed profound gratitude to the international representatives. He called for a collaborative effort with neighboring Liberia and Guinea to reinforce regional peace and security.
This meeting marks a pivotal moment for Sierra Leone, demonstrating the power of regional cooperation in ensuring democracy and stability.
